“If you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it.” – Joseph Goebbels, Propaganda Minister, Nazi Germany.
When it comes to the facts about school funding, legislative Democrats are taking a page out of the Gobbels’ playbook. Witness State Senator Janet Bewley. This week Bewley returned to the bogus claim that it costs taxpayers more to educate school choice students than public school students. The truth is that when all funding sources are considered, the total funding for public school students in 2016 was $10,312 while the total cost for choice students was $7,757 for K-8 students and $8,403 for high schoolers.
In fact, taxpayer funding for K-12 education is at an all-time high, yet school choice students outperform their Milwaukee Public School peers on the ACT. And no matter how many times Bewley and her colleagues say it, the prediction that Act 10 collective bargaining reforms would cripple public schools hasn’t come true either.
